FORTS TO VISIT IN GOA

Chapora Fort

If you’re a fan of the movie Dil Chahta Hai, then a trip to this fort is a must on your itinerary. The Chapora Fort is located about 10 kilometers from Mapusa. It was built by Adil Shah of Bijapur but in 1617, the Protugese took over it. They initially captured it with the intention of using as a border watch post. Finally in 1892 it was deserted. The ruins around the forst carry traces of Portugese architecture and this adds to the charm of the place.

The Chapora Fort provides a scenic view of the cliffs and the sea below it.

Aguada fort

Aguade means water in Portugese and this fort is one of the best preserved forts in Goa.

The Aguada fort was built by the Portuguese in 1612 AD, it was originally constructed to guard the northern shores of the Mandovi estuary from external attacks especially from the Dutch and Maratha raiders. The fort has a four storey Portuguese lighthouse erected in 1864, which was set up nearly two and a half centuries later. The lighthouse thus erected is the oldest and first of the lighthouses to be built in Asia. A smaller lighthouse by the name of 'The Aguada Beacon' was later built in.

Cabo da Rama

This also means ‘the camp of Rama’; legend has it that this fort was used by Lord Rama along with his wife Sita, when he was in exile. The fort is located in the southern coast of Goa and has passed through the hands of various rules until the Portuguese took it over from the Raja of Sonda in 1763. After taking charge of the fort, the Portuguese rebuilt it but did not put it to much use thereafter. It came under the British rule from 1797 to 1802 and then again from 1803 to 1813. After that, not much attention was paid to the fort. The remains of the fort were then used as a prison until 1955.

BEACHES OF GOA

NORTH GOA

Candolim

Most of the part of the Candolim beach has now been acquired by the Fort Aguada Beach Resort and other companies. However this is the first beach that can be reached from Panjim. Candolim is known for its efficient water sports facilities.

Calangute

Known as the ‘Queen of Beaches’, this is where every person visiting Goa heads to and as a result of this, the Calangute beach is easily one of the most crowded beaches of Goa. This beach is located 15 kilometers from Panjim.

SOUTH GOA

Palolem

This beach is located three kilometres from the Canacona railway station and 40 kilometers from Margao, there are various buses that give you an easy access to this beach. The Palolem beach is a long stretch of white sand and blue water, with little huts dotting the shoreline. Weekends are usually crowded at this beach so it is better to avoid this spot then.

Agonda

Agonda is the next beach on the way towards Panjim and one of the characteristics of this is that it is full of palm trees and a large hill towards the south of the coastline.

NIGHTLIFE IN GOA

The party in Goa doesn’t begin only at night but is on through the day! Due to its popularity as a tourist destination, there are pubs, clubs and nightspots galore in this state. Most of the popular ones are located in North Goa, while the South is just catching up. Apart from these joints, there are also informal beach parties that often happen by the seaside. These parties often happen at what are known as ‘Beachtheques’ which is a combination of beach and discotheques, instead of the usual DJ spinning tunes there is often a live band at these events
